14C The radioactive isotope of carbon. A 14C atom contains 6 protons and 8 neutrons.
AMS Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. In radiocarbon dating, the accelerator separates atoms by mass and computes the ratio of (14C) atoms to those of a stable carbon isotope (12C and/or 13C). This ratio is compared with that of a standard material to determine the radiocarbon age of the sample.
